Moscow is taking drone technology into uncharted territory with sea tests of an underwater unit that is both nuclear-powered and nuclear armed, reports Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

A source in the defense industry told the Russian news agency TASS that “factory trials” are scheduled to begin this summer.

The unmanned underwater vehicle is called Poseidon.

“The successful tests of Poseidon’s nuclear-powered energy unit opened the way to conducting at-sea factory tests of the vehicle. The tests will begin in favorable weather conditions this summer,” TASS quoted its source saying.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the submarines are to be equipped with conventional payloads, as wells as nuclear warheads, and “will be able to destroy enemy infrastructural facilities, carrier groups and other targets.”

Zerohedge reported it is listed in Russia’s state armament program for 2018-2027.

“Each drone has the capability of destroying an entire Western naval base, a coastal city, and even a whole aircraft carrier battle group,” the report said.

In March 2018, Putin revealed in an address to his parliament the plans for a drone propelled by a miniaturized nuclear reactor.
