(SFGATE) — Dozens of of elementary school students were left frightened, but safe, after a man attempted to hijack the bus in which they were riding. He apparently wanted to take them to a Southern California mission ahead of what he believed to be an impending visit from Jesus, according to police.

The man, 47-year-old Christopher Martinez, was unsuccessful in his attempt to take the bus and the children — thanks to the heroic efforts of the bus driver, a teacher and a gas station attendant, all of whom have not been identified as of this writing.

Early Monday evening, a bus full of 41 students from Reagan Elementary School stopped at a gas station in Fresno for a bathroom break on their way back from a field trip. A teacher was escorting a couple students over to the bathroom when Martinez boarded, demanding the driver take him to a mission in San Gabriel in Southern California, according to the Fresno Bee.
