(FRESNO BEE) — The stolen cross has been returned to St. Therese Catholic Church by a woman who said she found it in a field. She said she had kept the cross in her home and learned of its owner from news reports.
Father Michael Burchfield, the pastor at St. Therese, said the cross, which was not damaged, will be presented to parishioners at every Mass this week. The rest of the time it will be placed in the church vault for safekeeping. He received the news about the return of the cross Tuesday night, just after he returned to his home.
“They called me and said, ‘The cross is back,'” he said. His first reaction? “Don’t tease me.” But it wasn’t a joke. The woman who found the cross brought it to the church on her bicycle. Burchfield said the woman, who did not want to be identified, found it two days ago and learned from news reports that it belonged to the church. She was unaware a reward of $500 had just been posted by Crime Stoppers.
